1978 Porsche 928.
Mocha Brown, First year of production.
No sunroof.
5 speed manual.
Limited slip differential.
Matching numbers - Porsche certificate of authenticity.
#1041 in the production run.
Odometer works and reads 93,060.
Purchased from https://petescustomcoachbuilding.
com in Ohio.
Nothing was restored by them, it was a simple resale car that they came across.
Thankfully Pete recommended strongly that we not drive it anywhere.
It was leaking fuel, the brake hoses were almost completely closed up, the power steering hoses were leaking (flammable right next to the headers), etc.
It was trucked down to Texas and put into storage.
It has been garaged since I purchased it.
I don’t think it has seen rain in all that time.
I have gotten it to where I wouldn’t mind driving this anywhere in the DFW area, but this is not a daily driver.
It could be a rolling restoration at this point.
I’ll admit that the photos make it look better than it is.
There is still a lot to do and it would require a certain amount of commitment.
I am leaving it better than I found it but I just don’t feel like taking it any further.
I don’t know enough to know the full extent of what further needs to be done, but here’s a short list:
There’s a clicking noise in first gear
It rides well, but lots of clunky suspension noises.
Yes, the ball joints need to be replaced.
No idea when the timing belt was changed.
This is a non-interference engine.
It always starts right up but idle is sometimes low or hunting
AC and heat are non-functioning
God awful 90’s stereo installation.
And it doesn’t work.
Some redneck put dual side exhausts on when the original pumpkin muffler failed
Lots of paint chips and dings and some evidence of repaint in the passenger rear panel
On the plus side, the original Pasha upholstery is there (but well worn) and lots of usually long-gone original pieces remain - like the windshield washer filler neck, vinyl intake ductwork, and metal belly pan etc.
Here are some things that I have done.
The gas tank was removed and cleaned and the fuel level sender was rebuilt.
All new hoses from the tank to the engine and back.
Top end refresh.
All new hoses, vacuum lines, and gaskets on the top of the engine.
The fuel distributor was rebuilt.
The warm-up regulator was cleaned and new gaskets were installed.
Fuel pressures were checked and were in spec.
The brake cylinder and brake booster were rebuilt by White Post Restorations.
New stainless steel brake hoses.
New battery.
The alternator was rebuilt by Fort Worth Generator and Starter.
New power steering hoses.
A new set of tires.
New coil, distributor, spark plug wires, and spark plugs.
All fluids were flushed and replaced with recommended fluids.
All of the gauges work.
Oil pressure is good.
It doesn’t overheat.
It makes great vroom-vroom sounds.
I’m happy to show it off, but let’s not play games.
We can go for a ride to see that it moves, but this is not a car that I’m going to hand over so you can cross 928 off of your list of cars to try out.
It still needs suspension work so it’s not a great joyride anyway.
I don’t want to lead anyone astray - it will frustrate you and you will need to do a lot of research to keep it going.
I am not making any money off of this car and neither will you.
A full-price offer will also receive an additional show contact info Euro) parts car with drivetrain and clean title.
I also have goodies like parts, tools, and a full 7 (8?) volume Porsche shop manual in original binders.
There is a fantastic 928 group here in DFW as well as the top 928 parts supplier.
Interesting project and lots of resources.
